Cheechako is from the Chinook language that means "young one" or "tender foot". We offer two cheechako camps for "young ones" .

Sundance Cheechako Kayak Camp is nationally recognized for its ability to teach young adults the life-long activity of kayaking. Throughout our 36 years we have been revolutionizing the kayak curriculum. The staff will develop an individualized plan for your cheechako. This plan includes specialized goals and tailored one-on-one instruction for each camper.

The Rogue River’s wilderness setting, warm river water, progression of rapid difficulty and short van rides also contributes in our high success rate with young kayakers.

Our objective is to create a positive river experience for each camper as they learn the art of kayaking. Our safe learning environment is achieved by constant supervision, developmentally appropriate lessons and equipment (smaller boats, paddles, helmets and life jackets).

The instructor's focus their attention on kayak instruction while reinforcing wellness and enjoyment of the great outdoors. All four instructors are ACA certified kayak instructors, Wilderness First Responders, Swift Water Rescue Certified and hold current CPR/First Aid cards.

Beginner Kids Kayaking Camp Ages: 9-15

Our beginner kid’s kayak camp spends 5 days on the Rogue River and 4 nights at Almeda campground; we reserve campsites 1, 3, 4 and 6 for privacy.

The days are spent on the river kayaking, swimming or resting on a nearby beach. Evenings are spent at camp where we play games such as volleyball, frisbee golf, arts/crafts or head to the river for more swimming. After a great dinner, the nights are filled with story telling, music and campfires.

Skills taught: river safety, river reading, eddy turns, ferrying, rolling, basic surfing, and more.

Intermediate/Advanced 5 day Wilderness Trip Ages: 12-17

Cheechako's will camp the first night at Sundance The first day is spent warming up on the recreational section of the Rogue. The next four days are spent on the more advanced Wild Section of the Rogue River. The group will camp 3 nights along the river as they meander through 35 miles of wilderness.

Each day is packed with class II/III whitewater with many opportunities for surfing, stern squirting and cart wheeling. In the evenings, after a great self-prepared meal, we enjoy campfires, games, and stories of the days’ adventures.

Skills taught: river safety / river reading, hole riding, ferrying, perfecting the roll, advanced surfing, vertical/aerial stunts, and more.

Beginner/Intermediate 9 day kayaking camp and Wilderness Trip: Ages: 12-17

This camp combines the beginner camp and the intermediate camp. Let's face it, kids learn at a faster pace than adults. This camp allows kids to learn the basics of kayaking for 5 days and then apply their skills on our 4 day wilderness trip. This camp has become a very popular request by our dedicated parents.

Camper's are split up by age and ability throughout all Cheechako Kayak Camps.
