Sundance Kayak School

Want to improve your kayaking?

Sundance runs Intermediate Kayak Schools in Southern Oregon on one of our country's finest rivers for kayaking: the Wild and Scenic Rogue River. Our long history of teaching whitewater kayaking makes Sundance the leading kayak instruction school in the area.

Each 6-day school includes plenty of time to perfect your maneuvers as well as travel downriver to test your progress. The low student-to-instructor ratio offers plenty of one-on-one time with experienced paddlers. Small group size (12 students maximum) allows your instructors to emphasize safety, evaluate your skills, and work with you individually.

My family loved every moment of our week long kayaking school. Not only did the wonderful and fun guides teach us how to kayak and roll, but we also established friendships and memories that I know will last for a lifetime. Thank you, Sundance! We can't wait for our next trip.

Bring your Friends!

Friends or family members are welcome to join in the fun by riding downriver with one of our expert river guides. Oar boats will transport all personal gear, camping equipment, food, drinks and any guests of kayak students. With plenty of hiking, fishing or swimming opportunities, your loved ones will get to experience the beauty of a river trip while you pick up your new paddling skills.

Why the Rogue River?

The Rogue River is exceptional for intermediate paddlers for many reasons. It is a pool and drop style of river meaning that after each rapid, there is usually a large pool for recovery to catch your breath (or your paddle!). Also, because it is dammed upstream, the summer water levels are dependable and don't fluctuate daily. The water is surprisingly warm for a Northwestern river and summer weather is usually hot and sunny.

The river also increases in difficulty as your journey continues. You'll spend the first day on the recreation section as a warm-up day getting tips from instructors on perfecting your role and other maneuvers. Beginning on day 2, you'll enter the protected Wild and Scenic section. By day 4 or 5 of the school, you'll be ready for the challenge of Mule Creek canyon to put your fledgling skills to the test. The most difficult rapid on the Rogue is Blossom Bar, which is a Class IV rapid that kayaks will portage. With the great combination of easy stretches to perfect the basics and a 35 mile Class III stretch, the Rogue is the best place to learn.
